Achilles Bursitis

What is Achilles Tendon bursitis (Retrocalcaneal Bursitis)?

Achilles tendon bursitis is common in runners and athletes. Occasionally mistaken for Achilles tendinitis it can also occur in conjunction with Achilles tendinitis (Haglund's syndrome). The retrocalcaneal bursa (small sack of fluid) is situated in the feet between the Achilles tendon and the calcaneus (heel bone) to aid smooth movement of the tendon over the bone. With repeated trauma this bursa can become inflamed.

Symptoms of Retrocalcaneal Bursitis:

  • Pain at the back of the heels especially when running uphill or on soft surfaces.
  • Tenderness and swelling which might make it difficult to wear certain shoes on the feet.
  • Spongy resitance felt when pressing fingers in both sides of the heel.

Useful Products:

  • Cold Therapy Wraps help to reduce pain and swelling.
  • Heel Pads can help to reduce the stress placed on the attachment of the Achilles tendon and associated bursa.
